A Year of Making Rights Real
/This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 14th May 2025
Last week SCDC were delighted to attend an event celebrating the achievements of Making Rights Real, an organisation supporting marginalised communities to use the power of human rights to mobilise for economic and social change.
For a small organisation with just 1.6 FTE staff, their impact over the last 12 months has been considerable, with a range of projects and activity focused on communities realising their human rights.
In their annual report, the achievements of community members is front and centre, profiling the Fa'side Women and Girls Group on intergenerational Gender Based Budgeting, an update on the SEVEN project, and the Coalition of Carers on naming and claiming their human rights.
MMR also worked with Inspiring Leith in supporting the Cables Wynd Resident's Group to hold Edinburgh City Council to account around the quality of housing, and continue to work with travellers to support action to address ongoing human rights violations.
Making Right Real Director, Clare MacGillivray, spoke about working with love and compassion and how building relationships and trust "started with cups of tea", which will resonate with many community development practitioners. The event ended with a quote from Inez McCormack about "the power of being effectively annoying" to create the climate for change.
